Medical colleges, universities, and schools from around the world recruit students from India to attend their MBBS programs. In some instances, these recruiters or academic consultants provide only the positive aspects of attending a specific MBBS program abroad, and they fail to provide an accurate perspective on what graduates can expect in attempting to complete a PG in the USA, India, or many other countries around the world.
Different medical schools across Europe are actively recruiting students from India into their programs. What these efforts do not tell students considering an MBBS in Ukraine can have a very significant impact on the ability of the graduate to become a doctor. It is critical to ensure the training is provided through a university which fulfills the eligibility criteria of National Medical Council (NMC) which was replaced by erstwhile MCI.
Lack of Indian Culture and extreme weather
While there are a number of Indian students each year who complete their MBBS in Ukraine, there is not a large population of Indians in the country. This means limited options for finding Indian food, cultural events, communities, and religious places of worship. This can create a challenge for students as it is a very difficult culture and extreme cold environment.
Different Educational System
In addition to the culture change, the education system is different in Ukraine. Students will find there is less oversight of their progress and studies and more focus on individual responsibility, which is very different than the Indian education system.
Abysmal Prospects after completing MBBS in Ukraine
Many students are faced with the grim reality of the dismal prospects they have after completing MBBS in Ukraine. They find it extremely difficult to first pass the Screening Test(FMGE) in India and if they are amongst the just 10-30% students who are able to pass the Screening Test after completing MBBS in Ukraine, they are often not able to get PG seat in India.
Challenges in Completing PG in USA or India
Students completing their MBBS in Ukraine will have difficulty in being accepted to a PG in the USA as the most important and decisive factor in obtaining a Medical PG in USA is United States Clinical Experience(US-CE) obtained during ACGME approved Clinical Rotations in US Teaching Hospitals. Students will need to complete the Screening Test (FMGE) to work as a doctor in India. To apply for PG in the USA, students will need to successfully pass the USMLE, which includes several different components, including a nine-hour test of approximately 318 questions.
Good to know :-
From 2022, USMLE Step 1 exam will only be a Pass/Fail exam and students will not get any score.
This further illustrates the importance of ACGME Approved Clinical Rotations in USA hospital which can be done only as part of a Medical Curriculum and never after completing MBBS in Ukraine or any other country.
Obtaining a PG in the USA with an MBBS earned abroad is a very difficult process. This detail is often overlooked when recruiters discuss attending a school in Ukraine.
