If you are interested in adding natural stone kitchen countertops to your Minneapolis kitchen renovation or remodeling project but are worried about caring for the stone, there are some important facts to know. These are beautiful countertop options that are low maintenance, particularly if you follow a few simple steps to keep them in top condition.

Both marble and granite, which are the two most popular options in natural stone for kitchen countertops, are naturally porous. This means that small pores or surface “holes” allow liquids and materials into the stone, which results in staining. Etching can also occur if acidic liquids or foods make contact with the marble. The etching actually damages the stone at the surface.

Sealing the Stone

Marble, granite, and other natural stone countertops are typically sealed with specialized sealers. This is a very fine layer of clear sealant that protects the natural stone kitchen countertops’ surface from staining and etching, even with significant use.

The sealant does wear off over time. Most countertops will need sealing every three or so years, but this is an easy do-it-yourself project. Professional stone companies will also complete the process.

Clean Up Accidents and Spills

Be sure to immediately clean up any spills or messes on natural stone countertops. This can be completed with a damp or dry microfiber cloth. A wipe down with a damp sponge or cloth and then again with a dry cloth is all that is needed to keep the surface looking new.

As with any countertop surface in a Minneapolis home, do not place hot pots or pans directly on the natural stone. This can lead to damage to the sealant and the surface that is entirely preventable.
