You might think that if you get a group of youths together to play a game of baseball and if you give them tips on becoming a better team you may have just become a baseball coach. But if the primary focus behind leading that team is the social and emotional development of those young people then you’re a youth worker.

You’ll be teaching them to work as a team, take on leadership roles, learn how their actions can have a broader effect, and understand consequences, even considering gender roles and diversity issues would be incorporated in developing as a team playing together. Training for working with youths can help young people to understand more fully how to operate in the world and can assist to ready them for the world of work.

What will I learn?

You will learn to understand the viewpoint of the youths you’re working with and how, in turn, to use that to help them. You’ll learn to develop young people’s skills and attitudes rather than simply remedying their issues.
